SCIAVA Programs

The emphasis of SCIAVA related programs is to promote the health and well-being of individuals with spinal cord injuries. These interactive sessions provide knowledge and understanding of life after injury and explore quality of life concerns. People with spinal cord injuries, their families and caregivers, and health care professionals are encouraged to get involved. The following are brief descriptions including additional links to more specific information regarding each topic.

The Mentor Program
A Peer-Mentor Approach to Empower People with Spinal Cord Injuries. The purpose of this program is to help people with SCI by providing them with a peer-mentor - someone who has first-hand knowledge about SCI and life after the injury. Typically, a mentor is able to help because he or she is willing to share his or her unique life experiences and knowledge. Many successful people have had a mentor to help them achieve goals in areas like education, employment, recreation, and family life. Without this extra help, their goals could have been more difficult to achieve. You may fill out the online "Request Form" if you feel that you could benefit from having a mentor or contact the SCIAVA office for more information on this helpful program by calling (804) 726-4990 / VA Relay 711 or by writing to info@sciava.org

Quality of Life
The SCIAVA Quality of Life Program is designed to provide financial support to SCIAVA members with spinal cord injury or disease. This program was developed to foster participation in pre-approved, hobbies, sports, education, activities, gym membership, weight loss or smoking secession programs, education, and/or equipment needs. The program goal is to enable participants to achieve their highest level of independence, health, and personal fulfillment. As our budget allows, we will be offering a select number of awards of up to $250 each! Click here to download a Quality of Life Program Application.

Emergency Preparedness for People with a Disability
Past events such as 9/11, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have brought to the forefront the need for Emergency Preparedness plans, especially for people with a disability, special needs and seniors.
The Spinal Cord Injury Association of Virginia promotes being a part of "Ready Virginia" and provides programs along with a step by step process to help individuals prepare for when an emergency strikes.
This presentation serves as a overview in developing and implementing a "plan" as well as creating a "ready-kit" that holds the items one needs when an emergency happens. For more information contact the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Virginia at (804) 726-4990 or write us at info@sciava.org

Women with SCI "Chat" Group
Are you a woman with a spinal cord injury? Do you know of one? We have situations and circumstances that are different from our male counterparts. Would you like an opportunity to meet with other women to just talk about your experience? If so please join us! Contact the SCIAVA office for more information about the group as well as their next get-together at (804) 726-4990 / VA Relay 711 or write us at info@sciava.org

ADA Training 101
